Knights Rails Services Limited operates a train dismantling facility at Shoeburyness in Essex. Off lease vehicles that have come to the end of their commercial life are processed to remove contaminants (oil, batteries, fuel etc.) over a sealed surface drainage pit.
If asbestos is present (either white board or blue flock) the interior of the carriage is stripped of seats, racks and any other items that would prevent complete removal of the asbestos but without disturbing it.
The vehicle is then moved into a stripping enclosure that has a negative pressure unit (with HEPA filters to prevent particulate emmision) operating during the stripping process. Each vehicle is then sealed, has its own negative pressure unit fitted, with access being via a 3 stage air lock.
The interior walls, ceilings, etc., are then removed to allow access to the remaining asbestos, which is then removed and disposed of by specialist asbestors under the supervision of an independant analyst. Finally the vehicle is transported to its final destination for material recovery and recycling.
