Growing out of Knights Rail Services’ train disposal work, component recovery and storage is an increasingly important aspect of our business.

Rail vehicles often need strategic components stored, either as recovered items awaiting overhaul,   float items to aid overhaul programmes or strategic items that are no longer manufactured. The extensive undercover storage space at Eastleigh Works is purpose built for this.  

For component recovery we only use engineers who remove items carefully with spanners and the correct tooling. Unlike scrapyards, we always seek to avoid the use of gas cutting equipment as this runs a high risk of damaging the component. Once removed, the item can be assessed, identified and palletised ready for storage or despatch to the customer. We have regular deliveries and collections from hauliers to all parts of the country. Alternatively we are happy to load up customer arranged transport.

Our warehousing consists of over 2500 square metres of factory building. Items up to pallet sized are kept on pallet racking, but other items such as wheelsets are held in dedicated stores. We identify all goods with a unique code that enables us to provide itemised monthly invoices.

Where rail vehicles are stored at our site, it is usually more cost effective to get our qualified fitters to remove components from them, than to send your own personnel to the site. Our staff are experienced in rail vehicles and can identify and safely remove items without causing damage to vehicles. We are also able to select items on the basis of serviceability and can provide inspection and condition reports on items such as wheelsets.

The availability of the cranes at the Works means that we can handle and store items ranging  from small electronic components to whole bodyshells, bogies and power units. Agreed value insurance can be arranged for high value items in store.
