Knights Rail Environmental is unique in being the only asbestos removal company to work solely within the rail industry. Our experience and expertise is widely recognised as being the leader in the field of rolling stock decontamination, deriving from processing over 1000 of the most technically challenging carriages at our purpose built facilities at Shoeburyness and Eastleigh.

Coming from the defence, nuclear, environmental and rail industries gives us a unique understanding of the peculiarities of the rail environment and the high standards required. Our engineers have successfully licensed and operated three major environmental facilities since 1999, including large incineration plants adjacent to SSSI locations. These plants all operated under the IPPC / EA permit regime introduced by the PPC Regulations 2000.

As the large fleets built with asbestos have been decommissioned, the remaining vehicles with asbestos have tended to be historic vehicles, often with high levels of asbestos contamination dating back to their construction. In recent years we have been called on to work on steam engines and wooden coaching stock, in addition to the more common End Of Life rail vehicles.

In 2009 we achieved our 3rd Environment Agency (IPPC) permit for our new facility at Eastleigh Works. Unlike any other facility in the UK this is located inside a 2500 square metre building with three rail lines, a 25 metre inspection pit and 30 ton overhead crane.

The plant was designed to handle high volumes of vehicles per week with the emphasis on reverse engineering and component recovery as an integral part of the process.

We offer a total asbestos management service to our clients who have included Eversholt Rail, Alstom, Angel Trains, Serco, Network Rail, Siemens, Chiltern Railways and London Underground.

If you know or suspect that you have a railway vehicle with any form of contamination, get in contact with us and see how we can help you.
