Built as a locomotive build and heavy repair factory in 1909, Eastleigh Works was for almost a century the heart of railway engineering in the South of England.
In the 21st Century it is a unique location where the facilities of a major Railway Works are available for use by anybody in the railway industry. With 5 cranes capable of lifting loads of up to 50 tons and over a mile of track inside the main Works building, the site is simply unlike anything else still working in the UK.
The reborn Eastleigh Works operates on the basis of open access engineering. Customers can pay to use the facilities on an easy in - easy out basis for as long or as short a time as they need. This concept is new and allows smaller companies to have access to the type of facility that was previously only the preserve of the major train builders. It also allows cross benefits between the various companies that use the Works. For example we have tenants who operate a railway vehicle spray paint shop and shot blasting booth on site, as well as specialist HVAC, metal fabrication and electrical contractors.
Since Knights Rail Services took over the Works in 2006 we have provided facilities for all kinds of projects, from access to pitted roads for periodic inspection of track machines in a single day, to long duration overhaul programmes for complete fleets of Multiple Units. No other site in the UK handles this wide range of work.
We can provide areas of differing sizes for any length of time. Some lines are pitted and suitable for underframe and running gear overhauls, whilst others offer good side access for forklifts and large storage areas for interior stripping out and renovation projects. Multiple units of up to 120 metres long can be handled and all floors are suitable for synchronised lifting jacks. Two bays have overhead cranes fitted with 200 metre travel and 30/50 ton lifting capacities.
